Comment on Where Do You Get Your Morals From? by Zevaeros

Thanks.

Agreed that biblical morality reflects a much more savage and completely undesirable moral code. Sure, there are the bits that are fine enough to follow (which is what believers often cherry pick), but to claim them as "absolute" and "good" doesn't fly.

I have been pondering a "public key / private key" model of morality where there is a general group consensus, and each individual has their own interpretation and valuation of morals and values. They have to interface at some point in time, and if the keys don't match, moral conflict ensues. It's...not nearly fleshed out though.

Very good and thorough rebuttal to the "argument from morality."

Following the absolute rules from the Bible is not a great plan. They don't take into account nuanced situations and modern society...not to mention the rules that conflict with each other. It is like following laws, only outdated.

It's better to have personal reasons for each moral choice. Even though they will usually line up with what the law (or even the Bible) says, you take accountability for your actions. I ask people who ask this question if they have reasons outside of the Bible to not kill, rape and steal. Then I ask, why aren't those reasons enough?
